science

science

Although now retired from my scientific career, I still think quite often about those ideas that were never fully explored and that data that never got published. That little lot isn't doing any good just locked up inside my brain. Hence the idea to offload these things onto this site, hopefully freeing up my brain to get on with other stuff. Maybe (just maybe) they might be of interest to other scientists out there who come across this site in their Google searching.

weather

weather

This wireless weather station from Maplin is currently measuring sundry meteorological parameters from its perch on top of the clothes pole. Fingers crossed it survives the harsh Middleton climate!

UPDATE: the first one only lasted a few days but the replacement worked for about a year and a half. Now, after a few months downtime, I've replaced both the transmitter and receiver modules and it is now working again. 15/04/15

webcam

webcam

A webcam is currently set up facing east out of the window. Click on the link to open a new window for the live webcam - updated every 15 minutes. Useful to see what the weather is actually looking like in Middleton. Not a lot of use at night time though!

fish

fish

I've been a keen angler for most of my life, although cycling seems to have taken over as my main hobby recently. In 1996, I started a website using my Edinburgh University webspace which held various details about fish and fishing. I've stopped updating it but it's still fun to look back sometimes at the info in there. If and when it is deleted from the university server, I will put up a copy here.

cycling

Since retiring, Colette and I have taken up cycling and we are really enjoying exploring the local lanes and off-road paths. It's a lot of fun and I think it must be getting us a bit fitter into the bargain. We are challenging ourselves to go further and do more adventurous rides. We are never going to be like Wiggo and Chris Froome, but at least we get along a bit better!

Read a blog of sorts recording some of our rides in Midlothian (and occasionally beyond...)

beer

beer

Making your own beer is fascinating, fun and a bit like science, except you can drink what you make. It can also save you loads of money but it does take up a lot of your time. So a perfect thing to do in retirement then :-)

You can find some details about how I make my own beer or find out how to do it properly over at Jim's Beer Kit!
